Finding Pleasure in a Pandemic

Sometimes I like to say I am an artist when people ask what I do – I like it better than saying I’m retired! But even as I say it I know that I am no Maggie Hambling. I am just an arty crafty person who finds much pleasure in, with and through art.

In lockdown, apart from enjoying the garden, art took over the days. I was not one of those people who moaned about enforced days at home. In fact I was surprised at how much I loved the endless freedom of nothing in the diary to worry about or prepare for. I revelled in the time to explore and try out and get messy, in fact to leave a room covered in ink and paper, paint and canvas because no guests were coming – no one would mind.

I painted in oils, and tried for the first time using acrylics, but mainly I worked with lino and inks. In Autumn 2019 I had a day at an art class to learn the techniques and lockdown gave me the perfect time to practise and refine to find my own way with the prints. In fact I think it has taken me the whole year to get to the kind of prints I am happy with but on the way, some of them are pleasing enough.
